The Advantage and Disvantage of Lithium Batteries

According to the packaging form, power lithium batteries can be classified into three categories: cylinder, square and soft package. Cylinder and square are also collectively called hard-shell batteries. The core difference of the three power lithium batteries is that the cylindrical and square batteries mainly use metal materials as the shell, while the soft-packed lithium batteries use aluminum-plastic film as the packaging shell.

Square Battery: There have various models, and it is difficult to unify the process. Square hard-shell batteries are mostly made of aluminium alloy and stainless steel. The inner part of the batteries adopts winding or laminated technology. The protection effect of the batteries is better than that of the aluminium-plastic film batteries (i.e. soft-packed batteries). The safety of the batteries is also greatly improved compared with that of the cylindrical batteries. However, because square batteries are usually customized according to the size required by the product, there are many types of square batteries on the market at present, and the process is difficult to unify. For the new energy automotive power lithium batteries which need more than one series and parallel connection, it is more guaranteed to select the standardized production of cylindrical lithium batteries in the production process. Cylindrical battery: The production technology is mature and the product yield is high. Benefiting from the mature technology, the cost of PACK for cylindrical lithium batteries is lower, the yield of battery products is higher, and the heat dissipation performance is better than that of square batteries. However, cylindrical batteries are usually encapsulated in metal steel or aluminium shells, resulting in relatively low specific energy of batteries.

                                     

 

Soft-packed batteries: Lithium-ion batteries with aluminium-plastic film as the shell, have permeability of more than 60% in the field of 3C, and gradually expand to the new energy automotive industry. Compared with hard-shell batteries, soft-packed batteries have the advantages of flexible design, light weight, small internal resistance, less explosion, more cycles and high energy density. With the popularity of smart phones and tablets, soft-pack batteries have been developed rapidly. Because of their good ductility and high energy density, they are gradually applied to new energy vehicles, energy storage and other fields

                                                  

The greatest advantage of soft packaging is that it can improve the energy density of power batteries in the existing technology level, and further narrow the gap with fuel vehicles in the range of endurance. According to statistics, soft-packed batteries are 20% lighter than those with the same capacity and 50% higher than those with the same size. Compared with hard packaging, soft packaging can improve battery safety, reduce battery power consumption, prolong service life, and has design flexibility. The disadvantage of flexible packaging is that the mechanical strength of the packaging material is lower than that of the hard shell.
